The Pixel…… It seems like just saying that word should be followed by ominous music or something because it is a bit scary.
Ok, maybe not scary but it does evoke some anxiety because it is one of the more complicated parts of running Facebook Ads. The good news is, you don’t even need the pixel to run your ad. The bad news, if you want your ads to be successful you really do need the pixel.
With that said, let’s dive in to the Facebook Pixel Code.
What it is:
- Each ad account comes with one unique Facebook Pixel code.
- The Facebook Pixel Code is used to create custom audiences and to track conversions.
- You only need to place the Pixel on your website once and you are good to go.
What you can do:
There are a bunch of things you can do with the Pixel. As I mentioned, it is a very valuable tool. Some of the things that you can do are for the advanced user so I am only going to show you the basics of adding the Pixel to your website. If you want to learn how to build custom audiences and track conversions then please don’t hesitate to leave a comment or email me on my contact page for further training.
When you are in Facebook Ads Manager you can click on the drop down menu and then click on Pixels.
Then you will click on the word “Actions” and you will get this drop down menu…..
If you have never created a Pixel then you will need to click “Create Pixel”.
I usually just click on “View Pixel Code” and then I copy and paste to my website. Your Pixel code will look something like this….
I have blackened out my account number and in your Pixel code your account number will be where you see these marks.
Once you have your Pixel code saved to your clipboard you will want to place it on your website. This is a lot easier than it sounds.
If your blog or website is on WordPress I recommend adding the Insert Headers and Footers plugin. I know nothing about coding so this plugin will allow you to place your Pixel code on your website between the header tags (<head>) without actually having to find the <head> tags of your website. You can also send your Pixel code to your web developer and they can put it in for you.
Once you install the plugin you will go to your WordPress Dashboard and click on the name of whatever theme you are using. In my case I am using the Genesis theme so I click on that and that and go to theme settings. This where the plugin you just added will be.
Next to the section that says “Header Scripts” is an empty box where you will enter the Pixel Code. Save it and you are done! As a reminder, this is the base code and it will now track all traffic to your website. There are ways to insert the code to different pages and posts on your website but that is a much more advanced tracking strategy.
I strongly recommend using Google Chrome as your browser when you are doing Facebook Ads and then you can ad the Facebook Pixel Helper as an extension.
What this does is it allows you to make sure that your pixel is working on your site, your pages, your posts or wherever you put it. The little yellow button will show you if the pixel you added is active up by your search bar on your computer.
So this little image shows that I have one Pixel code on my website. When you go to other websites it will show you how many Pixels they have. Not that you need to know this, but it does tell you if your Pixel is working and installed correctly.
The cool thing about the Pixel Code is that once installed, it is tracking all of the traffic that goes to your website. Then you can create a specific audience out of all that traffic. This is called re-targeting and will give you a warm audience to sell too when you are ready to launch a product, program or service.
